No new classes of antibiotics have been developed for decades. Investment in basic scientific research is essential but so too is the investment by pharmaceutical companies in further development and bringing products to the market.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Focus on: physicians&#8217; assistants (anaesthesia)<\/strong><br \/>\nThis week we are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhsemployers.org\/news\/2018\/10\/focus-on-physicians-assistants-anaesthesia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">focusing on the role of physicians&#8217; assistants (anaesthesia)<\/a>.\u00a0This is part of the ongoing campaign to promote the medical associate professions (MAPs).\u00a0The MAP roles are four distinct professions within the NHS developed to enhance the workforce, performing some duties traditionally associated with junior doctors and providing continuity of care.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Support for locums and doctors in short-term placements<\/strong><br \/>\nNHS England has published the following documents on supporting locums and doctors in short-term placements, highlighting ways they may be supported to provide safe provision of healthcare:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/publication\/supporting-organisations-engaging-with-locums-and-doctors-in-short-term-placements-a-practical-guide-for-healthcare-providers-locum-agencies-and-revalidation-management-services\/\">Supporting organisations engaging with locums and doctors in short-term placements: a practical guide for healthcare providers, locum agencies and revalidation management services<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/publication\/supporting-locums-and-doctors-in-short-term-placements-a-practical-guide-for-doctors-in-these-roles\/\">Supporting locums and doctors in short-term placements: A practical guide for doctors in these roles<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Flu vaccination programme in England &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0House of Commons Science and Technology Committee<\/strong><br \/>\nThis <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm201719\/cmselect\/cmsctech\/853\/853.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report <\/a>examines the planning for the flu vaccination programme, how advice is formulated and cost-effectiveness issues are addressed, the reasons for different types of vaccines for different groups of the population, the effectiveness and take-up of the vaccination programme, and any plans for adjustments for the next flu season in terms of the vaccines uses and groups targeted.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Developing governance to support integrated care: a bumpy ride? &#8211; The King&#8217;s Fund Blog<\/strong><br \/>\nHaving spent a year working at The King\u2019s Fund with integrated care systems (ICSs), I have seen first-hand the potential of this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingsfund.org.uk\/blog\/2018\/10\/developing-governance-support-integrated-care-bumpy-ride\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new way of working for NHS patients and staff.<\/a> A key aspect has been developing governance systems, which is both important and challenging. As the recent\u00a0King\u2019s Fund report on the first year of the pilot sites\u00a0has shown, building an approach to governance has helped to start creating order and process in an environment where there is currently a distinct lack of a rule book.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>A short history of NHS winter funding\u00a0&#8211; The King&#8217;s Fund Blog<\/strong><br \/>\nWords can sometimes take on a whole new meaning in the NHS. A good example is the \u2018non-recurrent\u2019 funding that continues to be provided year after year to help the NHS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingsfund.org.uk\/blog\/2018\/10\/short-history-nhs-winter-funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cope with additional pressures over winter<\/a>. But even if the NHS banks on the reoccurrence of this non-recurrent funding, Figure 1 shows that it is still kept on its toes each year wondering how much funding will be available and when it will be provided.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>The legacy of PFI<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Centre for Health and the Public Interest has published <a href=\"https:\/\/chpi.org.uk\/papers\/reports\/dealing-with-the-legacy-of-pfi-options-for-policymakers\/\">Dealing with the legacy of PFI \u2013 options for policymakers<\/a>.\u00a0 This report analyses five options available to policy makers to address the problems caused by existing Private Finance Initiative schemes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Statistics<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/sex-ratios-at-birth-in-great-britain-2012-to-2016--2\">Sex ratios at birth in Great Britain<\/a> &#8211; 70 % of stroke patients have reduced or no use of their arm following their stroke. Shoulder pain is present in up to 84% of patients and can occur from 2 weeks to several months post stroke.
