Recruitment was at an all time low in August 2018 and more needed to be done to ensure that a good retention strategy was in place. A 6 Year strategy was designed. Taking a staff nurse through a 6 year programme covering all elements of ED Nursing, from RCN ED Competencies, trauma competencies, local competencies for professional development, all augmented with training days to augment learning. The programme then takes staff through quality improvement through a Champion/Link Nurse programme, focussing on their passions and giving them tools for improvement. The Nurse then moves onto Level 2 (Band 6 marker) which is about advanced skill levels in the ED/Trauma, how to run areas effectively and leadership. The Nurses have mandatory training days and at level 2, an in-house leadership training morning looks at the basics of leadership fundamentals and how to run a safe and high quality environment.

Long length of stay reviews This case study shows how Royal Preston Hospital, part of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, implemented the ECIST long length of stay reviews to achieve a reduction in the number of patients with a length of stay greater than 20 days.
