An ecological study, England 2005\u20132016 &#8211;\u00a0The Strategy Unit<\/strong><br \/>\nCuts to council social care budgets are often cited as a cause of pressure on NHS urgent and emergency care services. Much of the evidence supporting this link, however, is anecdotal. <a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/9\/4\/e024577\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This paper<\/a> set out to try and quantify the effect of cuts to social care on older people\u2019s use of emergency healthcare services.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>The task for providers in 2019\/20<\/strong><br \/>\nNHS Providers has published <a href=\"https:\/\/nhsproviders.org\/the-task-for-providers-in-201920\">The task for providers in 2019\/20<\/a>.\u00a0 This report draws on the results of a survey of NHS Providers\u2019 members and assesses the task facing trusts in the year ahead.\u00a0 It focuses on the deliverability of control totals, the efficiency challenge, and the likely impact on performance across the provider sector.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Community\u00a0services: our time &#8211;\u00a0NHS Providers<\/strong><br \/>\nThis <a href=\"https:\/\/nhsproviders.org\/media\/643890\/provider-voices-community-services-final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report <\/a>explores the opportunities and risks for the sector as a result of the NHS long term plan. It pulls together a range of voices from sectors representing NHS trust leaders, from the hospital, community, ambulance and mental health sectors, as well as representation from social care, primary care, and integrated care systems. It found that there is optimism among leaders within the community services sector about delivering the ambitions of the NHS long term plan but there are key questions to be addressed about the relationship between community services and primary care networks.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Every\u00a0minute matters: the impact of delayed discharges from hospital on terminally ill people in Northern Ireland &#8211; Marie Curie.<\/strong><br \/>\nThis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mariecurie.org.uk\/globalassets\/media\/documents\/policy\/policy-publications\/2019\/every-minute-matters-the-impact-of-delayed-discharges-from-hospital-on-terminally-ill-people-in-northern-ireland.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report <\/a>focuses on the extent \u2013 and underlying causes \u2013 of delayed discharges across local hospitals in Northern Ireland, the impact these delays are having on terminally ill people and what can be done to address the issue.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Caring\u00a0for the mental health of the medical workforce &#8211;\u00a0British Medical Association\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nThis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bma.org.uk\/-\/media\/files\/pdfs\/collective%20voice\/policy%20research\/education%20and%20training\/20190196%20bma%20mental%20health%20survey%20report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report <\/a>provides a summary of findings from a large-scale survey into doctors\u2019 and medical students\u2019 mental health. The survey, which was open to BMA members and non-members across the UK received over 4,300 responses. Four in ten respondents to our survey reported currently experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, burnout, stress, emotional distress or a mental health condition that is impacting on their work\/training\/study.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Key trends in social care<\/strong><br \/>\nThe King\u2019s Fund has published a \u2018long read\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingsfund.org.uk\/publications\/social-care-360\">Social care 360<\/a>. This review outlines and analyses 20 key trends in adult social care in England over recent years. It takes a broad perspective, including indicators that relate closely to health, housing, benefits and carers, as well as to the services provided by local authorities, and in doing so provides a &#8216;360 degree&#8217; view of the sector.
