{"id":13912,"date":"2019-07-25T09:52:37","date_gmt":"2019-07-25T08:52:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lihnnhs.info\/Sando\/?p=13912"},"modified":"2019-07-25T09:52:52","modified_gmt":"2019-07-25T08:52:52","slug":"knowledge-lert-for-thursday-25th-july","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lihnnhs.info\/Sando\/2019\/07\/25\/knowledge-lert-for-thursday-25th-july\/","title":{"rendered":"Knowledge @lert for Thursday 25th July"},"content":{"rendered":"<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Transforming elective care services<\/strong><br \/>\nNHS England has published the following handbooks to support the improvement of local health and care systems.\u00a0 The documents describe what systems can do to transform the services at pace, why this is necessary and how the impact of this transformation can be measured.\u00a0 They contain practical guidance for implementing and adopting a range of interventions to ensure patients see the right person, in the right place, first time.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/publication\/transforming-radiology-elective-care-services\/\">Transforming radiology elective care services<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/publication\/transforming-neurology-elective-care-services\/\">Transforming neurology elective care services<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/publication\/transforming-general-medicine-elective-care-services\/\">Transforming general medicine elective care services<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Quality improvement in emergency departments<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) has published the following reports from three national quality improvement projects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcem.ac.uk\/RCEM\/News\/News_2019\/RCEM_QIP_improvements_lower_leg_injury_blood_clots_risk.aspx\">Venous Thromboemolism risk in lower limb immobilisation<\/a> \u2013 finds that emergency Departments have made significant progress against RCEM standards for assessing risk of blood clots in patients with lower leg injuries<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcem.ac.uk\/RCEM\/News\/News_2019\/RCEM_QIP_finds_ED_struggling_to_achieve_timely_initial_assessment_of_children_with_fever_symptoms.aspx\">Feverish child<\/a> \u2013 finds that emergency Departments are struggling to achieve timely initial assessment and senior decision maker review of children presenting with fever symptoms<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcem.ac.uk\/RCEM\/News\/News_2019\/RCEM_QIP_improvements_vital_signs_adults.aspx\">Vital signs in adults<\/a> &#8211; finds there has been significant improvement in the process of repeating and acting upon abnormal vital signs and of appropriate actions taken in emergency departments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Reducing avoidable conveyance to A&amp;E<\/strong><br \/>\nNHS England has published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/publication\/planning-to-safely-reduce-avoidable-conveyance\/\">Planning to safely reduce avoidable conveyance<\/a>.\u00a0 This document aims to support ambulance services, lead commissioners and Sustainability &amp; Transformation Partnerships \/ Integrated Care Systems to safely reduce the number of patients conveyed to Accident &amp; Emergency Departments.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>High Intensity User services<\/strong><br \/>\nNHS England has updated its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/publication\/high-intensity-user-service-resource-pack\/\">Setting up a High Intensity User service<\/a> resource pack.\u00a0 The High Intensity User (HIU) service has been shown to offer a robust way of reducing frequent user activity to 999, NHS 111, A&amp;E, GP contacts and hospital admissions.\u00a0 This resource pack is intended to support local health communities who think that these innovations can be adapted and adopted to support an improvement opportunity in their local area.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>NICE Shared Learning<\/strong><br \/>\nThe following case studies illustrating how NICE guidance has been implemented have been added to the NICE Shared Learning website:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/sharedlearning\/nice-guidance-for-stable-chest-pain-patients-cg95-mtg32-to-appropriately-diagnose-patients-with-suspected-coronary-artery\">NICE Guidance for Stable Chest Pain Patients (CG95 &amp; MTG32) to Appropriately Diagnose Patients with Suspected Coronary Artery Disease<\/a> \u2013 Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/sharedlearning\/atrial-fibrillation-af-holistic-care-pathway\">Atrial Fibrillation (AF) Holistic Care Pathway<\/a> \u2013 University Hospital of North Midlands<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/sharedlearning\/how-we-used-a-world-cafe-as-a-springboard-to-support-heart-failure-teams-in-kent-surrey-and-sussex-to-implement-the-new-nice-guidelines-for-chronic-heart-failure\">How we used a World Caf\u00e9 as a springboard to support heart failure teams in Kent, Surrey and Sussex to implement the new NICE guidelines for chronic heart failure<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Antibiotic overuse<\/strong><br \/>\nNICE has published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/news\/article\/consider-shorter-courses-when-prescribing-antibiotics\">Antibiotic stewardship: duration of antibiotic treatment for common infections frequently exceeds guideline recommendations<\/a>.\u00a0 This \u2018Medicine\u2019s evidence commentary\u2019 evaluates new evidence and highlights areas for improvement when prescribing antibiotics. The findings suggest that guidance on antibiotic use is not being implemented as well as it could be in all areas which may lead to antibiotic overuse.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Paediatric radiology services<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Care Quality Commission has published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cqc.org.uk\/news\/stories\/cqc-irmer-inspections-specialist-paediatric-radiology-services\">Findings from CQC\u2019s IR(ME)R inspection programme of specialist paediatric radiology services<\/a>.\u00a0 This report brings together the findings from the CQC proactive inspection programme of specialist paediatric radiology services in 12 NHS children\u2019s hospitals in England.\u00a0 The CQC has found some examples of good practice but also identified some common themes and areas for improvement.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Better Care Fund planning requirements<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Department of Health and Social Care has published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/better-care-fund-planning-requirements-for-2019-to-2020\">Better Care Fund planning requirements for 2019 to 2020<\/a>.\u00a0 This document sets out the Better Care Fund planning requirements, which support the core NHS operational planning and contracting guidance for 2019 to 2020. It also details the Better Care Fund operating guidance.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Reducing the loss of x-ray findings<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch has published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsib.org.uk\/news\/latest-hsib-report-focuses-technology-reduce-risk-x-ray-findings-getting-lost\/\">Failures in communication or follow-up of unexpected significant radiological findings<\/a>.\u00a0 This report shows where technology could play a pivotal role in reducing harm caused by failures in communication or follow-up of unexpected significant radiological findings.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>NICE stroke guidance: workforce and resource impact<\/strong><br \/>\nNICE has published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/news\/article\/health-organisations-working-to-incorporate-nice-recommendations-into-nhs-care-to-benefit-thousands-of-patients-who-have-had-a-stroke\">NHS workforce and resource impact statement on stroke<\/a>.\u00a0 This statement is designed to help commissioners and trusts understand the potential impact on workforce and resources of implementing updated NICE guideline NG129 on stroke and transient ischaemic attack in over 16s.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>End of Life care audit data collection<\/strong><br \/>\nNHS England has published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/publication\/sample-retrospective-end-of-life-care-audit-data-collection-sheet\/\">Sample retrospective end of life care audit data collection sheet<\/a>.\u00a0 This template has been provided to support practices undertake a retrospective death audit as part of the End of Life care Quality improvement module for 2019\/20.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Interim Surgical Mesh Database<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership has published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hqip.org.uk\/resource\/interim-surgical-mesh-database-feasibility-report\/\">Interim database feasibility report: urogynaecological\u00a0surgical mesh<\/a>.\u00a0 This report makes ten recommendations for the establishment of an interim database to collate data relating to urogynaecological surgical mesh implants.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Primary care indicators<\/strong><br \/>\nIn their latest indicator update, QualityWatch has looked at trends in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk\/news-item\/primary-care\">quality of primary care services<\/a>.\u00a0 The indicators cover access to GP services, patients\u2019 overall experience of GP services, confidence and trust in clinicians, involvement in decisions about care, supporting patients to manage their long-term condition, potentially preventable emergency admissions, emergency admissions for children with chronic conditions, cancer screening and antibiotic prescribing.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Workforce Race Equality Standard annual collection<\/strong><br \/>\nNHS England has published a template for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/publication\/workforce-race-equality-standard-annual-collection\/\">Workplace Race Equality Standard annual collection<\/a>.\u00a0 This template is intended to
