Evaluating the current state of research in the NHS &#8211; Health Management and Policy Alert,\u00a0 University of Birmingham<\/strong><br \/>\nAccording to this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancerresearchuk.org\/sites\/default\/files\/cruk_every_patient_may2015_web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a>, based on interviews with clinicians, nurses and administrators involved in NHS clinical cancer research, daily pressures on the NHS are having a serious impact on its ability to support world-leading research into cancer. It reveals pockets of excellence in clinical research, but also showed how escalating pressures to deliver routine NHS services are squeezing out time for hospital staff to do vital research. It also highlights how financial pressures are affecting research infrastructure and the capacity of host organisations to fund additional research costs.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>NHS launches new collaboration to sustain and improve local hospitals &#8211; NHS England<\/strong><br \/>\nThe NHS<a href=\"http:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/2015\/05\/20\/improving-local-hospitals\/\" target=\"_blank\"> invites expressions of interest from hospitals across England<\/a> interested in developing new ways of delivering and improving their local acute services.The aim is to enhance the viability of local hospitals through new formal shared working arrangements between clinical specialists at different hospitals, and to improve efficiency by sharing back office administration and management between different sites.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Dying without dignity: complaints about end of life care<br \/>\n<\/strong>The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman has published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ombudsman.org.uk\/reports-and-consultations\/reports\/health\/dying-without-dignity\">Dying without dignity: investigations by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman into complaints about end of life care<\/a>.\u00a0 This report is intended to inform the debate about how, as a society, standards to improve the quality of end of life care offered across the country can be developed. It features 12 cases that illustrate the issues the Ombudsman regularly sees in casework on end of life care. The examples represent a diverse collection of stories, drawn from a range of different health care settings.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Prime Minister\u2019s plan for a 7 day NHS<\/strong><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/pm-on-plans-for-a-seven-day-nhs\">Prime Minister has set out his vision for a modern NHS that will work for patients 7 days a week<\/a>.\u00a0 The speech set out the government\u2019s plans to prioritise patient access to all services \u2013 from GP access to hospital care \u2013 backing NHS England\u2019s plan for modernising the NHS.\u00a0 Investment into the NHS will increase by \u00a38 billion a year by the end of the Parliament to support the transformation of services across the country, including an increase in the number of GPs, faster access to new drugs and treatments and a greater focus on mental health and healthy living.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>The practice of system leadership<br \/>\n<\/strong>The King\u2019s Fund has published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingsfund.org.uk\/publications\/practice-system-leadership\">The practice of system leadership; being comfortable with chaos<\/a>.\u00a0 This report draws on the experiences of 10 senior leaders to look in depth at the skills needed to be a system leader. The 10 individuals are from different backgrounds and work in different contexts, and give some very candid reflections on their successes and failures. But they share a track record of having tried to bring about change (not always successfully) through using \u2018soft\u2019 power, enabling others to see and deliver the changes that are needed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Caring into later life<br \/>\n<\/strong>Carers UK and Age UK have published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carersuk.org\/caring-into-later-life-report\">Caring into later life: the growing pressure on older carers<\/a>.
