This new report follows last year\u2019s report from the Royal College of Physicians who published the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcplondon.ac.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/why_asthma_still_kills_executive_summary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">National Review of Asthma Deaths<\/a>, a UK wide investigation which found safety concerns in the cases of those who died from asthma attacks. The review identified prescribing errors in almost half of all asthma deaths in primary care and, overall, found that two-thirds of asthma deaths could be prevented with better routine care.\u00a0 Asthma UK reveals in this new report evidence that over 22,000 people with asthma in the UK, including 2,000 children, have been prescribed medicines (long-acting reliever inhalers) in a way that could pose a risk to people with asthma. It also highlights that almost 100,000 people have been prescribed too many short-acting reliever inhalers (more than 12 in a year) without national clinical guidelines being followed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>Prescription and other NHS charges<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">The House of Commons Library has published a briefing paper <a href=\"http:\/\/researchbriefings.parliament.uk\/ResearchBriefing\/Summary\/CBP-7227\" target=\"_blank\">The prescription charge and other NHS charges<\/a>.\u00a0 This paper sets out the provision for prescriptions and dental charges, which groups are exempt, and explains where charges vary in devolved countries.\u00a0 It also covers efforts to reduce prescription wastage and examines the future of NHS charges.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>Work experience toolkit for employers<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>NHS Careers has produced a new resource to help employers provide high quality work experience programmes.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhsemployers.org\/news\/2015\/06\/a-new-work-experience-toolkit-for-employers\" target=\"_blank\">More than Photocopying: Work Experience &#8211; a toolkit for the NHS<\/a> provides guidance on how to recruit the best people, advice on setting work plans and tips on celebrating outcomes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>NICE shared learning case study; irritable bowel syndrome<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>NICE has added <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/sharedlearning\/improving-evidence-based-management-of-irritable-bowel-syndrome-across-somerset\" target=\"_blank\">Improving evidence-based management of irritable bowel syndrome across Somerset<\/a>\u00a0to its shared learning database.\u00a0 The shared learning example shows how NICE guidance and standards have been put into practice.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Eyes on Evidence<br \/>\n<\/strong>The latest edition of NICE\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/Media\/Default\/newsletter\/Eyes-on-Evidence-June-2015.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Eyes on Evidence<\/a> (June 2015) contains the following items:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Socioeconomic inequalities in cancer mortality<\/li>\n<li>Implementation of antibiotic prescribing guidance<\/li>\n<li>Costs of autism spectrum disorders<\/li>\n<li>Stenting versus endarterectomy for symptomatic carotid stenosis<\/li>\n<li>Imaging techniques to diagnose suspected kidney stones<\/li>\n<li>Evidence summaries from NICE\u2019s Medicines and Prescribing Programme: COPD, infantile haemangioma, asthma, and acute coronary syndromes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Evidence summary: new medicines &#8211; Ulcerative colitis \/ Type 2 diabetes<br \/>\n<\/strong>NICE has published two new evidence summaries new medicines, the details are as follows:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/advice\/esnm58\">Ulcerative colitis: budesonide multimatrix (Cortiment) (ESNM58)<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/advice\/esnm59\">Type 2 diabetes: dulaglutide (Trulicity) (ESNM59)<\/a>.\u00a0 Evidence summaries: new medicines&#8217; provide a summary of the published evidence for selected new medicines, or for existing medicines with new indications or formulations, that are considered to be of significance to the NHS. Ninety-nine per cent of local authorities were confident that they would able to carry out the Act reforms from April 2015.\u00a0 However, it warns that the Department\u2019s cost estimates and chosen funding mechanisms have put local authorities under increased financial risk given the uncertain level of demand for adult social care.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b><strong>Treatment of chronic Hepatitis C in patients with cirrhosis<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/b>NHS England has published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/commissioning\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2015\/06\/hep-c-cirrhosis-polcy-statmnt-0615.pdf\">Clinical Commissioning Policy Statement: treatment of chronic Hepatitis C in patients with cirrhosis<\/a>.\u00a0 There are a range of new oral treatments becoming available for Hepatitis C and so this policy statement sets out the hepatitis treatments that will be routinely commissioned by NHS England for the treatment of chronic hepatitis in patients with cirrhosis. It also sets out how access to treatments will be organised with the setting up of Operational Delivery Networks from August 2015 and arrangements in the interim.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b><strong>Mycobacterial infections associated with cardiopulmonary bypass surgery<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/b>Public Health England (PHE) is working with the NHS, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency and NHS England to investigate a small number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/mycobacterial-infections-associated-with-cardiopulmonary-bypass-surgery\">mycobacterial infections<\/a> potentially associated with heater cooler units used during cardiopulmonary bypass for cardiac surgery.\u00a0 After an alert from European colleagues at the end of February regarding Mycobacterium chimaera infections following cardiothoracic surgery, PHE has conducted a look-back and identified 13 cases of mycobacterial infections in people who had this type of surgery since 2007, 10 of which are Mycobacterium chimaera.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b><strong>NHS staff wellbeing<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/b>The Picker Institute Europe has published <b><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pickereurope.org\/news\/staff-wellbeing-is-key-to-a-quality-healthcare-experience\/\">Understanding staff wellbeing, its impact on patient experience and healthcare quality<\/a>. <\/strong><\/b>This briefing sets out to understand the pressures currently affecting the NHS workforce and the impact that they in turn may have on the wellbeing both of individual staff and the health service as a whole. These include implications for patient care and experience and some consideration of the implications for improvement.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><b><strong>Productivity in NHS hospitals<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/b>The Department of Health has published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/productivity-in-nhs-hospitals\">Review of operational productivity in NHS providers<\/a>. This interim report outlines work carried out by Lord Carter of Coles to review the productivity of NHS hospitals, working with a group of 22 NHS providers.
