experience of using hospital services: An analysis of trends in inpatient surveys in NHS acute trusts in England 2005-13<\/a>.\u00a0 Introduced in all NHS acute trusts in England in 2002, the annual inpatient survey was the pioneer in the launch of the national NHS patient survey programme. This analysis provides new insights into existing data about the national picture, as well as revealing trends at trust level.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">NICE guidance: Intravenous fluid therapy in children and young people in hospital &#8211; NICE<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">NICE has published <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/ng29\" target=\"_blank\">Intravenous fluid therapy in children and young people in hospital<\/a><\/strong> (NG29). This guideline covers general principles for managing intravenous (IV) fluids for children and young people under 16 years, including assessing fluid and electrolyte status and prescribing IV fluid therapy. It applies to a range of conditions and different settings. It does not include recommendations relating to specific conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Quality Standard: intrapartum care &#8211; <span lang=\"EN-US\">NICE <\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong>NICE has issued a new quality standard <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/qs105\" target=\"_blank\">Intrapartum care<\/a><\/strong> (QS105): This quality standard covers the care of women who go into labour at term (37+0 weeks to 41+6 weeks) and their babies during labour and immediately after the birth.\u00a0 It covers both women who go into labour at low risk of intrapartum complications and women who go on to develop complications.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>Behavioural insights in health care &#8211; The Health Foundation<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span>The Health Foundation has published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.org.uk\/publication\/behavioural-insights-health-care\" target=\"_blank\">Behavioural insights in health care: nudging to reduce inefficiency and waste<\/a>.\u00a0 It has been suggested that nudges \u2013 approaches that steer people in certain directions while maintaining their freedom of choice \u2013 might offer an effective way to change behaviour and improve outcomes at lower cost than traditional policy tools.\u00a0 The review identifies: nudge-type interventions with potential to increase efficiency and reduce waste in health care; areas of inefficiency and waste to which nudge-type interventions might be productively applied; and opportunities and considerations for those looking to introduce nudge-type interventions.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>District nurse specialist practitioner qualification &#8211; The Queen\u2019s Nursing Institute<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Queen\u2019s Nursing Institute has published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qni.org.uk\/for_nurses\/policy_and_practice\/district_nursing_spq\" target=\"_blank\">The Value of the District Nurse Specialist Practitioner Qualification<\/a>. This report highlighted that district nurses have to possess an incredibly broad range of skills, and a very high level of skill and expertise.\u00a0 However the report showed that the positive impact and value of the special practitioner qualification (SPQ) was not always clearly understood. The District Nursing SPQ is the very best preparation for a nurse working in the community to deliver holistic care, managing complex caseloads, preventing unnecessary hospital admissions and promoting patient comfort and safety.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Chief Medical Officer Annual report 2014<br \/>\n<\/strong>The Department of Health Chief Medical Office has published the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/chief-medical-officer-annual-report-2014-womens-health\" target=\"_blank\">Chief Medical Officer Annual report 2014: The Health of the 51%: Women<\/a>.The report focuses on women\u2019s health in England and makes a range of recommendations to improve it. It identifies several missed opportunities for intervention in women\u2019s health, and brings attention to \u2018embarrassment\u2019 as a needless barrier to health. The main themes include: obesity and its impact on women\u2019s health, including reproductive health; women\u2019s health in later life (menopause) and women\u2019s health in later life (pelvic floor dysfunction and incontinence)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>Allied health professionals: interventions to improve public health<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Public Health England has published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/allied-health-professionals-interventions-that-improve-public-health\" target=\"_blank\">The role of allied health professionals in public health: examples of interventions delivered by allied health professionals that improve the publics\u2019 health<\/a>.\u00a0 Public Health England commissioned a team of academics led by Sheffield Hallam University to undertake an initial review to:\u00a0 identify examples where there is good evidence of impact on public health by Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) and therefore an opportunity to broaden practice; and identify areas which require more focus to demonstrate impact by AHPs on public health.\u00a0 This report describes the key findings of this work.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>Improving staff engagement and morale &#8211; NHS Employers<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">NHS Employers has published details of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhsemployers.org\/case-studies-and-resources\/2015\/12\/calderdale-work-together\" target=\"_blank\">case study<\/a> focusing on how Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust has improved staff engagement and morale since implementing a new approach to change management.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>Maternal mental health care &#8211; The Healthcare Improvement Partnership<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">The Healthcare Improvement Partnership has published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hqip.org.uk\/news-events\/news\/mmbrace-2015-report-perinatal-mental-health-care\/saving-lives-improving-mothers-care-2015-lay-summary\" target=\"_blank\">Saving lives, improving mothers\u2019 care<\/a>.\u00a0 This report is the latest analysis from the MBRRACE-UK Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths, based at the University of Oxford.\u00a0 The report focussed particularly on maternal mental health, and includes lessons learned from reviews of the care of more than 100 women who died by suicide during pregnancy or in the year after giving birth between 2009 and 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"New resource for Nursing &amp; Midwifery staff preparing for Revalidation Cochrane UK has launched two new series that aim to put relevant evidence into the hands of nurses and midwives, shared on social media in quick, easy formats.
