But which technologies will have a similarly transformative impact on health and care? The King\u2019s Fund has looked at some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingsfund.org.uk\/publications\/articles\/eight-technologies-will-change-health-and-care\" target=\"_blank\">examples of innovative technology-enabled care <\/a>that are already being deployed in the NHS and internationally to transform care. Now, we examine the technologies most likely to change health and care over the next few years.Some of the technologies we discuss are on the horizon \u2013 others are already in our pockets, our local surgeries and hospitals. But none are systematically deployed in our health and care system. Each could represent an opportunity to achieve better outcomes or more efficient care.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>A zero cost way to reduce missed hospital appointments \u2013 Department of Health<\/strong><br \/>\nThis randomised controlled trial tested the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/reducing-missed-hospital-appointments-using-text-messages\/a-zero-cost-way-to-reduce-missed-hospital-appointments\" target=\"_blank\">effectiveness of the reminder message sent to outpatients.<\/a> Results showed if the message included the specific cost to the NHS of not attending then the patient was more likely to attend or rearrange their appointment \u2013 rather than miss it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Considerations For Determining Local Health And Care Economies \u2013 Monitor<\/strong><br \/>\nThe NHS planning guidance, Delivering the Forward View: NHS planning guidance 2016\/17 to 2020\/21 asks every health and care system to produce its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/488707\/Considerations_for_determining_local_health_and_care_economies_selective_branding.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">sustainability and transformation plan (STP)<\/a>. One of the first steps in this process is for local health and care systems to agree the geographic scope of their STP.
