Delays can increase the overall cost of treatment and may worsen patient\u00a0outcomes. We investigate how delayed discharges vary by hospital type<\/a> (Acute, Specialist, Mental\u00a0Health, Teaching), and the extent to which such differences can be explained by demography, casemix,\u00a0the availability of long-term care and hospital governance as reflected in whether the hospital\u00a0has Foundation Trust status, which gives greater financial autonomy and flexibility in staffing and\u00a0pay.<\/p>\n
