April 2014\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0The King&#8217;s Fund<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>This is the eleventh in a series of <a href=\"http:\/\/kingsfund.blogs.com\/health_management\/2014\/04\/how-is-the-nhs-performing-april-2014.html\" target=\"_blank\">quarterly monitoring reports<\/a> which aims to provide a regular update on how the NHS is coping as it grapples with the evolving reform agenda and the more significant challenge of making radical improvements in productivity. It highlights that the NHS has had no real rise in spending between 2010\/11 and 2013\/14, yet despite this, in broad terms the NHS has continued to provide services to a growing population and to maintain the quality of those services. However, our survey finds that there is deepening pessimism about the ability of the NHS to make ends meet financially, particularly in 2015\/16.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingsfund.org.uk\/sites\/files\/kf\/field\/field_publication_file\/quarterly-monitoring-report-april2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Report<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingsfund.org.uk\/publications\/how-nhs-performing-april-2014\" target=\"_blank\">The King&#8217;s Fund publications<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Pathology goes digital in Coventry and Warwickshire \u2013 Health Service Journal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A West Midlands trust has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsj.co.uk\/hsj-local\/acute-trusts\/university-hospitals-coventry-and-warwickshire-nhs-trust\/pathology-goes-digital-in-coventry-and-warwickshire\/5069942.article?referrer=RSS#.U0yYrVVdXDU\" target=\"_blank\">digitised its pathology processes<\/a>, allowing its medical staff to view samples and slides in high resolution on computer screens from any location.\u00a0The system has been introduced by University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire Trust, in coordination with Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology services.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonhslks.com\/contact-us.html\" target=\"_blank\">Contact the Library &amp; Knowledge Service<\/a> to request this article or Phn. 01704 704202<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Half of nurses fear another Mid Staffs, snapshot survey reveals \u2013 Nursing Times<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nearly half of all nurses believe their organisation is at risk of becoming the \u201cnext Mid Staffs\u201d or heading that way already, reveals the latest large-scale survey on NHS staffing levels.The findings suggest many nursing teams are operating at danger point, with ongoing shortages damaging patient care, according to a Unison <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nursingtimes.net\/nursing-practice\/clinical-zones\/patient-safety\/exclusive-staff-levels-still-dangerous-a-year-after-mid-staffs-report\/5067631.article\" target=\"_blank\">poll reported by the Nursing Times.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Patient Safety Alert: Residual anaesthetic drugs in cannulae and intravenous lines: Stage 1 Warning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Requires <a href=\"http:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/psa-residual-anaesthetic-drugs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">all hospitals and\u00a0community services\u00a0that undertake surgery\u00a0or other investigations\u00a0and procedures using\u00a0anaesthesia<\/a> by no later than 13th May 2014 to:<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Establish if local systems are adequate to prevent the risk of\u00a0leaving residual anaesthetic drugs\u00a0in cannulae or intravenous line post\u00a0surgery or investigation\/procedure\u00a0requiring anaesthesia in your services\u00a0and if similar incidents have occurred.<\/li>\n<li>Consider and document if immediate action needs to be taken locally and\u00a0develop an action plan, if required, to\u00a0reduce the risk of a similar incident\u00a0occurring.<\/li>\n<li>Disseminate this Alert to all staff involved in caring for patients post\u00a0anaesthesia<\/li>\n<li>Share any learning from local investigations or locally developed\u00a0good practice resources by emailing:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:patientsafety.enquiries@nhs.net\" target=\"_blank\">patientsafety.enquiries@nhs.net<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>From Innovation To Adoption: Successfully Spreading Surgical Innovation: Royal College of Surgeons (RCS)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rcseng.ac.uk\/publications\/docs\/from-innovation-to-adoption\/@@download\/pdffile\/rcs_innovation_to_adoption_2014_web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">report <\/a>warns that failure to adopt new surgical techniques quickly into everyday clinical practice means NHS patients are missing out on ground-breaking new procedures. It sets out the factors that have helped and hindered the adoption of new surgical techniques in England and seeks to address how to progress the uptake of surgical innovations in a practical way, eradicating delay to ensure their benefits are realised by patients as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Running On Empty: NHS Staff Stretched To The Limit \u2013 Unison<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Highlights <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unison.org.uk\/upload\/sharepoint\/On%20line%20Catalogue\/22245.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">research <\/a>that demonstrates the clear link between appropriate patient staff ratios and patient mortality and details results of a survey of almost 3,000 nurses from across the UK highlights the pressures staffing levels in the NHS. The survey reveals that 65% of staff said that they did not have enough time with patients and 55% reporting that as a result care was left undone.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Integrating funds across health and social care is not a panacea according to recent review<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecommissioningelf.net\/integrating-funds-across-health-and-social-care-is-not-a-panacea-according-to-recent-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">review from the University of York\u2019s Centre for Health Economics<\/a> is certainly timely for commissioners in England, with plans for the Better Care Fund\u00a0well\u00a0underway and Simon Stevens, the new Chief Executive for NHS England, recently quoted as saying \u201cno-one should pretend just combining two financially leaky buckets will magically create a watertight funding solution\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Policy paper: Plans to improve primary care<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/plans-to-improve-primary-care\" target=\"_blank\">Transforming Primary Care<\/a>\u2019 sets out plans for more proactive, personalised and joined up care, including the Proactive Care Programme, providing the 800,000 patients with the most complex health and care needs with:<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>a personal care and support plan<\/li>\n<li>a named accountable GP<\/li>\n<li>a professional to coordinate their care<\/li>\n<li>same-day telephone consultations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The plan builds on the role of primary care in keeping patients well and independent.
