This new report is calling for greater investment and better understanding of the impact of the \u201cwider public health workforce\u201d people who are not professionally qualified public health practitioners, but have the ability or opportunity to positively impact public health in their community. The report argues that this \u201cwider workforce\u201d could be instrumental in reducing the burden of health inequalities the financial cost of which was last estimated at close to \u00a360bn.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Health and wellbeing metrics and demographics\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0NHS Employers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NHS Employers have\u00a0added <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhsemployers.org\/news\/2014\/06\/health-and-wellbeing-metrics-and-demographics\" target=\"_blank\">new information, case studies and useful links<\/a> to the health and wellbeing section of their website on using metrics and demographics.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Employers respond to the GMC&#8217;s new powers for checking doctors&#8217; language skills\u00a0&#8211; NHS Employers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Changes in the law yesterday (25 June 2014) which give the General Medical Council new powers to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhsemployers.org\/media-centre\/2014\/06\/employers-respond-to-the-gmcs-new-powers-for-checking-doctors-language-skills\" target=\"_blank\">check the English language skills of licenced doctors<\/a> have been welcomed by employers.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Sign up to safety campaign<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Secretary of State for Health has launched a new campaign<a href=\"http:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/2014\/06\/24\/sign-up-to-safety\/\">\u00a0sign up for safety<\/a>.\u00a0 The campaign has set out a three-year shared objective to save 6,000 lives and halve avoidable harm with the aim ensuring patients get harm free care every time, everywhere.\u00a0 NHS England, Department of Health, Monitor, NHS Trust Development Authority, NHS Litigation Authority and CQC have all agreed to sign up, and have made a commitment to align their organisations\u2019 work with the campaign.<br \/>\nAdditional link:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/nhs-rated-on-open-and-honest-reporting-culture-in-world-leading-transparency-drive\">Department of Health press release<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/sign-up-to-safety-monitor-commits-to-improving-safety-and-reducing-avoidable-harm-in-the-nhs\">Monitor press release<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Publication of staffing levels and the &#8216;Sign Up To Safety&#8217; campaign\u00a0&#8211; NHS Employers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhsemployers.org\/news\/2014\/06\/publication-of-staffing-levels-and-the-sign-up-to-safety-campaign\" target=\"_blank\">actual versus planned nurse and midwifery staffing levels<\/a> in May have been published on the NHS Choices website and a new safety website has been launched which allows the public to see how their hospital is performing on key safety measures.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>NHS Trust Development Authority signs up to safety\u00a0 &#8211; TDA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The NHS Trust Development Authority (NHS TDA) has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ntda.nhs.uk\/blog\/2014\/06\/24\/nhs-trust-development-authority-signs-up-to-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\">signed up to the \u2018Sign up to Safety\u2019 campaign<\/a>.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">The campaign aims to make the NHS in England the safest healthcare system in the world by halving avoidable harm, saving around 6,000 lives a year.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; line-height: 1.714285714;\">The campaign has the potential to not only improve the quality and safety of services, but is also aligned with the NHS TDA\u2019s core aim of supporting NHS Trusts to deliver sustainable quality in every part of the system.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Inquiry into patient centred care on the 21st century\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/kingsfund.blogs.com\/health_management\/2014\/06\/inquiry-into-patient-centred-care-on-the-21st-century.html\" target=\"_blank\">Inquiry <\/a>has been established by the RCGP with the objective of delivering original, cost effective solutions to the medical, social and financial challenges posed by rising levels of multi-morbidity within society. The Inquiry is being undertaken by a panel of experts drawn from a range different perspectives within the healthcare system, including both patients and professionals. It will look at the role of general practice within the context of primary, community and social care services. The Inquiry is currently inviting evidence submissions from all who have a stake in this issue \u2013 including patients, health professionals, managers and decision-makers \u2013 to help inform its work.
