Access all ages 2: variations in access to surgical treatment among older people\u00a0–\u00a0Royal College of Surgeons\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This report<\/a>, by the Royal College of Surgeons and Age UK, warns that age discrimination in the NHS may still be preventing older people from having access to life-saving surgery. An analysis of surgery rates across England\u2019s 211 CCGs, for six common procedures which are known to be effective in older people, shows there was widespread variation in the rates of surgery for people aged over 65 and 75, depending on where they live.<<\/p>\n

Managing the care of people with long-term conditions\u00a0 –\u00a0House of Commons Health Select Committee<\/strong><\/p>\n

This report <\/a>finds that 15 million NHS patients in England with long-term conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and asthma account for 70% of the annual expenditure of the NHS in England. It argues that demographic and cost pressures on the NHS from patients with long-term conditions is only likely to increase in the coming years, with one projection estimating that the bill for treatment of long-term conditions will require the NHS to find \u00a34 billion more each year by 2016.<\/p>\n
