Placing this tube\u00a0is called intubation and\u00a0is one reason\u00a0why\u00a0sedation is usually required\u00a0when commencing invasive ventilation. Initially it is usual for the ventilator to do most of the patient\u2019s \u00a0breathing for them, but as their condition improves the intensive care team will lighten the patient\u2019s\u00a0sedation and allow them to do more of the breathing for themselves. <!--more-->Once their underlying illness has improved,\u00a0the patient may be woken up and \u2013 if breathing adequately for themselves \u2013 will have the breathing tube removed. This is called extubation.
