Measuring the effectiveness of home telemonitoring – British Journal of Healthcare Management Article

As home telemonitoring (HTM) moves away from randomised controlled trials and towards the mainstreaming of services, a clear set of guidance on how to evaluate them is needed. Without appropriate and systematic evaluations, the healthcare sector and those who commission its services will not be able to learn important lessons about which aspects of HTM work best. This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of different strategies that can be employed by commissioners and service providers in the evaluation of HTM services.

Surgical innovation report

The Royal College of Surgeons has published From innovation to adoption: successfully spreading surgical innovation.  The report sets out the factors that have helped and hindered the adoption of new surgical techniques in England.  It highlights that from the first antiseptic operation, through to organ transplantation, keyhole techniques and robotic technology, innovation has revolutionised NHS care. However, it warns that if the NHS is to continue to be at the forefront of improving patient care, supporting research, new techniques and ideas must become business as usual.

Scarlet fever guidance

Public Health England (PHE) has reported a continued substantial increase in scarlet fever notifications across England with 1,049 new cases reported from 31 March to 6 April. Scarlet fever is a seasonal disease and this is the time of year when the highest numbers of cases are typically seen. PHE has published new guidance on the public health management of scarlet fever outbreaksin schools, nurseries and other child care settings. The guidance will support Health Protection Teams, working closely with schools, nurseries and colleagues in local authorities, to control outbreaks of scarlet fever in child care settings and protect vulnerable children and adults.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC): proposed changes to the governing legislation – Department of Health (DH)

The legislation that governs the NMC is currently restricting its ability to effectively carry out some of its duties. Proposed changes to the Nursing and Midwifery Order 2001 will improve handing of fitness to practice cases; allow registrants who are not fit to practice to be removed from the register; and change who sits on registration appeal panels.
