Building improvement capability is not only about skill building; it also includes creating an environment in which frontline staff can identify and participate in needed improvements. In this post, David Munch, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer for Healthcare Performance Partners, argues in favor of better support for middle managers who lead improvement efforts by dispelling myths about building improvement capability. The myths identifies are:

Integrated care pathway empowers people to manage their long term condition at home – NHS IQ
Leicester City CCG launched a new care pathway to better support people with a long term condition to manage their health at home, supported by new community-based services. The new model combines shared decision making using a new patient decision aid, health coaching and telehealth monitoring. During a six-month pilot with 50 patients, the unscheduled admission rate fell from an average of 3.29 per person to 1.24 and the service delivered cost savings of £353,000 and a significantly improved patient experience.

Improving experiences of care
The National Quality Board (NQB) has published Improving experience of care: our understanding and ambition.  The NQB is a multi-stakeholder board established to champion quality and ensure alignment in quality throughout the NHS.  This document sets out a common way for the national health and care organisations on the NQB to talk about people’s experiences of care and their roles in improving them.  It also includes examples of good practice and resources, to support organisations and individuals in improving experiences of care.

Guidance: Chemical and radiation incidents: recovery handbooks and tools – HM Government
This e-learning module provides an overview of:

  • the purpose scope and structure of the recovery handbooks
  • how to use handbooks and tools for developing a recovery strategy following a chemical or radiation hazard
  • the chemical and radiation recovery navigation tool

The short run elasticity of National Health Service nurses’ labour supply in Great Britain –  Institute for Financial Studies (IFS) 
The paper investigates the short run responsiveness of NHS nurses’ labour supply to changes in wages of NHS nurses relative to wages in outside options available to nurses, utilising the panel data aspect of the annual survey of hours and earnings. We find the short run responsiveness of NHS nurses’ labour supply to the relative wage of NHS nurses is positive and statistically significant, albeit economically small, in regions outside the London area. In contrast, in the London region, the short run elasticity is much higher. We discuss the policy implications of these findings.
