There is a little appetite among clinical commissioning groups to move their member practices off the national GP pay for performance framework, despite recently being given powers to do so. CCGs that took control of their primary care budgets in April, under delegated commissioning arrangements with NHS England, are permitted to replace the national quality and outcomes framework for GPs with a “locally designed incentive scheme”. Hunt’s deal for doctors forces primary care to be top priority – Health Service Journal
It remains to be seen if Jeremy Hunt’s plan will be the news all GPs want to hear but it has fixed primary care reform to the top of the list of priorities for the NHS.   If a GP from 1948 could be transported to 2015 they would find that, while clinical practice has evolved dramatically in the intervening decades, the ownership and business model remain largely the same in many places.  If Simon Stevens and Jeremy Hunt get their way, this will change over the next five years.

Patient experience data
Membership Engagement Services in collaboration withInHealth Associateshas published Making Sense andMaking Use of Patient ExperienceData. Thereport considers the use of patient experience data by trusts including what’s being collected, how and why, and how the results are being used to improve services. The report notes the dedication of patient experience teams, but says the sheer volume of corporate data and other pressures on them are limiting their ability to put the information to work.

NHS Employers has published The Staff Survey Comparison Tool which allows NHS organisations to use data from the staff survey and national patient survey to assess their relative scores on key issues against other NHS organisations and areas.  It compares scores across a range of indicators and should complement information from the staff survey provider and data provided on the NHS Staff Survey website.
