Commissioning for crisis care and recovery
NHS Clinical Commissioners has published a briefing Commissioning for crisis care and recovery.  This briefing has been developed from a Mental Health Commissioners Network event held in April 2015.  The meeting was called to consider the next steps for commissioning crisis care and recovery services and explore the challenges facing commissioners as services are moved out of traditional models and into new service-user and community-focused services.


Services for people with neurological conditions
The National Audit Office has published Services for people with neurological conditions: progress review.  The report suggests progress has been mixed in implementing recommendations made by the Public Accounts Committee in 2012 aimed at improving services and achieving better outcomes for people with neurological conditions.  It found that there is still considerable work required to implement the recommendations in full and achieve the better services and outcomes that the Committee was seeking.

Female genital mutilation guideline
The Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists has published Female genital mutilation and its management (Green-top Guideline No. 53). This second edition of the guideline provides evidence-based guidance on the management of women with female genital mutilation (FGM) and those who are considered to be at risk. It covers the clinical care of women before, during and after pregnancy, including the legal and regulatory responsibilities of health professionals. The focus of this guideline is on practice in the UK.


NICE Bites: Depression in children and young people
The May 2015 NICE Bites bulletin from the North West Medicines Information Service covers Depression in children and young people (CG28). The aim of this publication is to provide healthcare professionals with a clear and succinct summary of key prescribing points taken from the NICE guidance, CG28.  This guideline covers the identification and treatment of depression in children (aged 5 to 11 years) and young people (12 to 18 years) in primary, community and secondary care.


Fetal anomaly screening
Public Health England has published Fetal Anomaly Screening Programme: programme handbook June 2015. This guidance brings together the Fetal Anomaly Screening Programme’s (FASP) guidelines and recommendations that relate to the screening pathway and are not covered in detail in the other handbooks. It includes: an overview of the fetal anomaly screening programme (FASP);  details of the markers used in the screening tests and the tests themselves; information about Down’s, Edwards’ and Patau’s syndromes; information about diagnostic testing and non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT);   quality assurance processes; key performance indicators; screening safety incidents; and ultrasound images and schematics.


Eyes on Evidence
The latest edition of Eyes on Evidence (July 2015) includes the following items:

  • Symptom remission and quality of life in schizophrenia
  • Enhanced care and support at hospital discharge for older patients
  • Using information on quality to make decisions about services
  • Long working hours and alcohol use
  • Risk of neuropsychiatric adverse events with varenicline
  • Evidence summaries from NICE’s Medicines and Prescribing Programme (osteoarthritis and low back pain;  medicines optimisation; and COPD)

NICE consultations
  NICE has published the following consultations:

  • Insertion of a subretinal prosthesis system for retinitis pigmentosa.  Closing date for comments: 6 August 2015.
  • Implantation of a corneal graft-keratoprosthesis combination for severe corneal opacity in wet blinking eyes.  Closing date for comments: 6 August 2015.
  • Endovascular aneurysm sealing for abdominal aortic aneurysm.  Closing date for comments: 6 August 2015.
  • Electrical stimulation of the lower oesophageal sphincter for treating gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.  Closing date for comments: 6 August 2015.
  • Gallstone disease: quality standard consultation.  Closing date for comments: 6 August 2015.
  • Sunlight exposure risks and benefits: guideline consultation 2.  Closing date for comments: 6 August 2015.
  • Dementia (update): consultation on the draft scope.  Closing date for comments: 5 August 2015.
  • Multiple sclerosis: quality standard consultation.   Closing date for comments: 5 August 2015.
