NICE guidance: Hip fracture
NICE has updated its Quality Standard Hip fracture in adults (QS16). This quality standard covers the diagnosis and management of hip fracture in adults (aged 18 years and over). It describes high-quality care in priority areas for improvement. It does not cover the prevention of hip fracture, which is covered in osteoporosis and falls in older people.


Improving confidence in conversational English – NHS Employers
This case study discusses how Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust partnered with Creative English to develop and deliver a learning programme for their international staff, designed to improve confidence in conversational English.


Sustainability and Transformation Plans
The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy has published Sorting the plans.  This briefing examined the first nine of the 44 Sustainability and Transformation Plans (STPs) to be publicly released.  It looks at how the STPs are shaping up and whether integrated working can do more to help make them a success.


NHS staff from overseas
The House of Commons Library has published a briefing NHS staff from overseas: statistics.  This briefing gives detail on the nationality of NHS staff by region for doctors, nurses and other staff categories in England.  The briefing shows that 12% of NHS staff are nationals of a country other than the UK.  This includes 5% who are nationals of other EU countries.


NIHR Journals Library
The National Institute for Health Research has launched a new website for the NIHR Journals Library.  The website provides information relating to NIHR research throughout the life of each project and provides access to the published research in the NIHR’s open access, peer reviewed series of journals.  It intends to increase the impact of NIHR research, so that evidence is shared more effectively with the NHS and wider public health landscape.


Care for older people with frailty
The Royal College of General Practitioners and the British Geriatrics Society have published Integrated care for older people with frailty: innovative approaches in practice.  This report focuses on how GPs and geriatricians are collaborating to design and lead innovative schemes to improve the provision of integrated care for older people with frailty. It highlights 13 case studies from across the UK including schemes to help older people remain active and independent, provide better services in the community and support patients in hospital.


NHS efficiency map
The Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) and NHS Improvement have updated the NHS efficiency map.  The map is a tool that promotes best practice in identifying, delivering and monitoring cost improvement programmes in the NHS. It contains links to a range of tools and guidance to help NHS bodies improve their efficiency.
