NHS and social care priorities for 2017
The Kings Fund has identified five main priorities for 2017.  Priorities for the NHS and social care in 2017 examines supporting new care models centred on the needs of patients; strengthening and implementing sustainability and transformation plans; improving productivity and delivering better value; developing and strengthening leadership at all levels; and securing adequate funding for health and social care.

  • Manchester Royal Infirmary Virtual Biologics Clinic
  • Developing and implementing a set of outcome measures incorporating NICE Standards across the whole stroke care pathway in Greater Manchester
  • A quality improvement project looking to improve the knowledge base and safe prescribing of maintenance intravenous fluids in adults amongst FY1 doctors at a large teaching hospital in accordance to the NICE guideline CG174

What if…we eradicated obesity?
The Kings Fund has published another essay from the ‘What If’ hypothetical scenarios series What if we eradicated obesity? Looking back from 2050.  The author looks back at the impact of the ‘obesity epidemic’ in the first years of the 21st century charting the dates when legislation passed by successive governments have reduced the problems of obesity for NHS services.

Barcode technology helping to improve patient safety – Department of Health 
The barcode technology used in major industries such as aerospace and retail is being introduced to the NHS in England to improve patient safety. Barcodes are being placed on breast implants, replacement hips, medication and surgical tools. The £12 million Department of Health ‘Scan4Safety’ project is already helping staff to quickly and easily track each patient through their hospital journey. From the unique barcodes on wristbands patients receive when they enter hospital, to the barcodes used to record their medication and the equipment used in their treatment, each code can be scanned to show which member of staff administered each treatment, at what time and where.
