  • Four CCGs to hire joint chief then create ‘single organisation’
    The four clinical commissioning groups in Derbyshire are to begin recruitment for a single shared chief officer, and are planning to move to a ”single strategic commissioning organisation”.
  • New CQC inspection model depends on £9m IT upgrade
    The Care Quality Commission is to invest up to £9m upgrading its information technology systems as part of a major two year overhaul to help boost its efficiency.

Emergency care audits
The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) has published audit reports on three aspects of emergency care:

  • Moderate and acute severe asthma clinical audit 2016/2017: National report  – audit showing that many emergency departments are finding it challenging to adhere to the time standards set by the British Thoracic Society and RCEM
  • Severe sepsis and septic shock clinical audit 2016/17: National report – audit showing an improvement in the proportion of patients receiving the best care for severe sepsis and septic shock, but that improvements are needed to make treatment available faster
  • Consultant sign off clinical audit 2016/17: National report –  this report audits 24,341 of the most high-risk patients presenting to 180 emergency departments.  It identifies a number of high risk conditions that merit senior review or sign off.

Inpatient Survey: medicines-related questions
The Specialist Pharmacy Service has published The Inpatient Survey – things we forget to remember.  This document gives a brief background to the Inpatient Survey and looks at the medicines-related questions.  It provides themes from trusts that have improved their scores which may be of use to other organisations.

Healthy commissioning: How the Social Value Act is being used by Clinical Commissioning Groups – National Voices and Social Enterprise UK 

  • Analysis of findings based on FOI requests to CCGs (n=191) to assess their use of the Public Services (Social Value) Act 2012. Findings include:
    • 13% of CCGs can demonstrate active commitment to pursuing social value in their procurement and commissioning decisions;
    • 43% had no policy / were not aware of a policy or had a policy in development;
    • 13% of CCGs demonstrated ‘highly committed, evidenced and active’ use of the Social Value Act.
    • Weighting procurement for social value is limited and a pass/fail question or a weighting of 2% of the total evaluation was common.
    • 13% of STPs mention social value.
  • Recommendations include building social value into NHS England’s Right Care programme and joint guidance on implementation of the Social Value Act.

Ageing workforce will exacerbate NHS staffing crisis – BMJ
The staffing crisis in the UK health service is set to deepen, unless serious attempts are made to stave off the anticipated retirement of 15% of its workforce within the next decade, finds a new report from the independent think tank, the King’s Fund.


GPs call for more support to challenge CQC ratings and inspections – GP Online 
GPs have no confidence in the CQC and need support to help them challenge the process and appeal against ratings, LMCs have said.

This resource contains case studies from providers that have been rated ‘good’ for safety by the Care Quality Commission. They offer practical guidance to developing and spreading good practice on assessing and responding to patient risks, medicines management and safety culture.


Supporting newly qualified nurses into the world of work – Evidence-Based Nursing blog 
Finishing university and starting employment is an exciting time for newly qualified nurses. It’s the beginning of what is generally a long, successful and exciting career within the profession. It can, however, also be a stressful or challenging time as they make the transition from student nurse to registered, fully autonomous practitioner. Newly qualified nurses can feel that they are unprepared for their new role and the demands made upon them; this can lead to stress and dissatisfaction , and some decide to leave the profession within a year of qualifying. This results in significant personal costs for individual nurses and has an impact upon employers, organisations and patients.
