  • Private hospital firm takes NHS to court over rogue surgeon 
    An NHS trust that employed breast surgeon Ian Paterson is being taken to court by a private provider, which claims the health service has a legal responsibility to compensate private patients.
  • NHS England rebuff GIRFT surgery recommendations 
    NHS England has rebuffed an attempt by efficiency leaders to ensure commissioners follow national guidance over the provision of bariatric surgery.

Complaints handling

The Good Governance Institute has published Complaints handling in NHS organisations: Board Assurance Prompt.  This document aims to support NHS organisations instil best practice in the management of complaints.


Networked Care toolkit

The Institute of Health Care Management has published Networked Care: a toolkit for sustainable single specialty services.   The toolkit is based on work by Moorfields Eye Hospital and aims to help trusts to evaluate whether networked care could help their smaller clinical services.  It includes advice on how organisations can establish their own network.


Mortality: North-South health divide

Research published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health highlights that dying early (under age 75) is 20% more likely in northern England compared with southern England.  North-South disparities in English mortality 1965–2015: longitudinal population study shows a sharp rise in premature deaths among middle-aged adults in the North which have been rising since the mid-90s.  There were 49% more deaths among 35-44 year olds in the North in 2015 and 29% more deaths among 25-34 year olds in the North in 2015.


Sepsis in the burn patient: a different problem than sepsis in the general population 
Review of sepsis in burn patients. Sepsis is the leading cause of death in the burn patient but most clinical sepsis studies have excluded burns because the sepsis found in burn patients is different than that of the general population
