National Diabetes Audit

The Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership has published three reports from the National Diabetes Audit:

  • National Diabetes Audit, 2016-17 report 1: care processes and treatment targets England and Wales – provides GP practice and specialist service level information and supplementary reports on severe mental illness and learning disability with diabetes
  • National Diabetes Footcare Audit: third annual report 2014-17 – presents findings on care structures, patient management and outcomes of care for people with active diabetic foot ulcers
  • National Diabetes Inpatient Audit England and Wales, 2017 – details the quality of diabetes care provided to people with diabetes while they are admitted to hospital whatever the cause.

Care for people with diabetes and a learning disability

A collaborative team funded by The Health Foundation and the University of Leeds has created a set of evidence-informed, practical resources to improve care for people with diabetes and a learning disability. The resources help commissioners and health practitioners to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ to the care they provide to people with diabetes breaking down barriers for people with a learning disability.


Instant messaging in the NHS: an exploration of the relationship between consumer messaging applications and modern healthcare delivery – CommonTime
This report reveals that 43 per cent of NHS staff rely on consumer instant messaging at work. It finds that WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and other unauthorised instant messaging apps are being used by 500,000 NHS staff at work, as a growing number turn to consumer tools to communicate with colleagues and sometimes patients.


Using your apprenticeship levy – NHS Employers
This briefing looks at how NHS organisations can successfully tap in to the apprenticeship levy, and the wider benefits of providing apprenticeships and how they can support with addressing workforce supply challenges.


Quality patient referrals: right service, right time – Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP)
This report argues that referral management centres must demonstrate their safety for patients and cost-effective to the whole NHS. It cites a dearth of evidence on referral management centres and argues that  they are ultimately more expensive to run than other systems designed to improve and maintain the quality of GP referrals.


Community indicators project: Improvement tool – NHS Improvement
The scorecard is a set of indicators that can be used to compare trusts to peers on patient and staff experience, and the effectiveness and responsiveness of their services.


Seven day hospital services: implementing a seven day frailty flying squad- NHS Improvement
Robin Fackrell, consultant physician and head of medicine division, Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust outlines an initiative in geriatric care which aims to expedite the discharge of frail older patients as part of the delivery of seven day hospital services.


NIHR Signals

The National Institute for Health Research has published the following Signals containing summaries of published research for health and social care decision makers:

  • Common osteoporosis drugs may prevent breast cancer spreading to bone
  • Hypertonic saline as effective as normal saline for trauma patients
  • Imaging is the only way to diagnose blood clots in pregnancy
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation improves exercise tolerance in pulmonary fibrosis
  • Statins are of no benefit in acute respiratory distress syndrome
  • Mat Pilates probably improves balance and strength in older adults
  • Waiting at home after inducing labour mechanically may be an option for low-risk women
  • Diet and exercise programmes can prevent diabetes in high-risk individuals
  • Inhaled anaesthesia with anti-sickness medication in children has the same risk of vomiting as intravenous anaesthesia

Meningococcal disease guidance

Public Health England has published Guidance for public health management of meningococcal disease in the UK.  This 2018 guidance on the public health management of individual cases and clusters of invasive meningococcal disease is an amalgamation of the 2014 guidance on preventing secondary cases of MenB disease and the 2012 guidance for public health management of meningococcal disease in the UK.
