STPs and ICSs
NHS Providers has published Key questions for the future of STPs and ICSs.  This is the second in a series of briefings on sustainability and transformation partnerships (STPs).  It summarises recent developments relevant to system working, sets out the state of play for STPs and integrated care systems (ICSs) and seeks to offer answers to a number of questions arising from the national policy focus on collaboration and integration.

Familial Hypercholesterolaemia
Public Health England has published Familial Hypercholesterolaemia: Implementing a systems approach to detection and management.  This guide, aimed at local commissioners and service providers, provides information on the recently updated NICE Guideline (CG71) Familial Hypercholesterolaemia: identification and management including best practice case studies.

NHS Quality Checkers: patient surveys
To support the NHS Quality Checker toolkits NHS England has published a series of patient surveys for NHS Quality Checkers to use with people with a learning disability who use the services they are quality checking.  The surveys cover dental practices, community services, acute hospital care and A&E services.

NHS England case studies
NHS England has published the following case studies:

  • Mid and South Essex: Safe staffing in general practice
  • Pioneering home alteration project between NHS and Council helps get people home from hospital sooner – Mansfield District Council

Assessment of delirium
The Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership has published a spotlight audit from the National Audit of Dementia.  Assessment of delirium in hospital for people with dementia: spotlight audit 2017-2018 looks at the identification and assessment of delirium in hospitals to identify variance in interpretation and gain  more accurate knowledge of the extent to which delirium assessments are not performed.

Ophthalmology data audit
The Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership has published National Ophthalmology Database Audit: year 3 annual report – the second prospective report of the NOD audit.  This report looks at all cataract operations undertaken between 1 September 2016 and 31 August 2017. Reported operations were performed in 75 English and two Welsh NHS Trusts.  For the first time, an independent provider of NHS cataract surgery supplied data.

NICE recommendations: charging and appeal panels
The government is consulting on proposed changes to legislation to allow the NICE to charge companies for making technology appraisal and highly specialised technology recommendations relating to their products.  The consultation also includes changes to the regulations to allow NICE to recruit appeal panel members from the healthcare system in the UK.  Consultation closes 14 September 2018.

Feasibility of colorectal cancer PROMs
The Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership has published National Bowel Cancer Audit: the feasibility of reporting Patient Reported Outcome Measures as part of a national colorectal cancer audit.  This report details the results of a study examining the feasibility of reporting Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) as part of a national audit of colorectal cancer patients in order to assess the quality of life in survivors.

Bowel cancer screening
The UK National Screening Committee has recommended that bowel cancer screening in England should start 10 years earlier.   Following a review of the evidence, the committee recommends that screening should be offered from aged 50 to 74 using the faecal immunochemical home test kit (FIT).  Screening people at a younger age would enable more bowel cancers to be picked up at an earlier stage, where treatment is likely to be more effective and survival chances improved.
