Acute medical care in England: findings from a survey of smaller acute hospitals -Nuffield Trust
This profile of smaller hospitals in England finds trusts struggling to recruit and retain acute medical staff. Services across the country are configured in a wide variety of ways, with little evidence of an ‘ideal’ model for acute medical care emerging from our research.

Leading as a junior doctor – Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management
This toolkit is designed to help junior doctors build, sustain and run their own local leadership and engagement structures. It includes a number of case studies which showcase good practice from across the country as well as some practical guides to help with the day-to-day management of these groups. It also summarises the relevant academic literature and explains how different local leadership structures relate to existing contractual requirements.

A year of integrated care systems: reviewing the journey so far – The King’s Fund
Integrated care systems represent a fundamental and far-reaching change in how the NHS works across different services and with external partners. This report is based on interviews with eight of the ‘first wave’ integrated care systems to understand how they are developing and to identify lessons for local systems and national policy-makers.

Meeting pathology demand: histopathology workforce census – Royal College of Pathologists
This workforce census finds that only three per cent of NHS histopathology departments have enough staff to meet clinical demand. The report highlights the intense pressures that histopathologists face from increased workloads, such as new NHS screening programmes. In addition, services are facing more complex work as personalised medicine develops and guides new therapies. Outdated IT systems compound these pressures.

Brexit ‘no deal’ scenario briefing
NHS Providers has published UK government’s preparations for a ‘no deal’ scenario.  This third briefing highlights key issues which might have an impact on health and social care services from a further set of technical notices published by the government which set out the preparations the government is undertaking to plan for a possible ‘no-deal’ Brexit scenario.

Developing a digital career framework
NHS Improvement has published Clinical informatics and digital delivery in health and care: a career framework outline for nurses and allied health professionals.  This guidance outlines a career framework to enable nurses and AHPs to develop a career in digital health/clinical informatics and help clinicians and professional bodies recognise their contribution to systems development, implementation roll-out and evaluation.  NHS Improvement has also published a toolkit for clinical staff regarding the effective deployment of digital systems.

NHS Digital has awarded eighteen councils a share of £1.4m to develop digital projects that support social care.  The funding is aimed at supporting collaborative partnerships between local authorities, the third sector, health partners and academia to demonstrate how predictive analytics and digital information sharing can improve care and support for people needing social care services.
