Financial reporting
The Healthcare Financial Management Association has published Financial reporting watching brief 2018/19 and beyond.  This briefing covers changes and developments in accounting standards, best practice in financial reporting and government reporting requirements.  It covers the current financial year but also looks ahead to identify changes which will affect the NHS in the future.


Implementing the NHS Long Term Plan: legislative proposals
NHS England has launched a consultation Implementing the NHS Long Term Plan – proposals for possible changes to legislation.  The consultation is seeking views on potential proposals for changing current primary legislation relating to the NHS which could make the implementation of the Long Term Plan easier and faster.  The consultation closes on 25 April 2019.


NHS e-Referral Service
NHS England has published NHS e-Referral Service: guidance on payment authentication.  This document provides guidance on the use of Patient Administration Systems and SUS+ to capture information to support Payment Authentication discussions in connection with the NHS Standard Contract.  This document is aimed at commissioners, GP practices, and all providers of acute consultant-led outpatient services which accept referrals from GP practices.


Atlas of Shared Learning
NHS England has added the following case studies to the Atlas of Shared Learning:

  • Introducing group consultations for adults with Type 2 diabetes – Wigan and Manchester
  • Development of the ‘Avoiding Falls Level of Observation Assessment Tool’ – Northumbria
  • Implementation of a best practice framework to support staff to care for individuals with dementia
  • Using technology to improve patient care in District Nursing Services – Whittington
  • Nurse Led Digital Health Service – delivering place-based care to older people – Tameside and Glossop
  • Improving smoking cessation in pregnancy at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust
  • The development of a ‘Therapeutic Engagement Questionnaire’ (TEQ) Tool – London
  • Personal care planning in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease at Solent NHS Trust
  • Implementing physical health training – North Staffordshire
  • Implementing a mobile dental unit into a mental health inpatient ward

General practice workforce
The Health Foundation has published a chart showing changes to the general practice workforce.  The chart indicates that, in contrast to the trend among GPs, the number of nurses and other direct patient care staff working in general practice has continued to rise.

Urinary catheter tools
NHS Improvement has published tools to support the healthcare system to consistently manage and remove urinary catheters.  The urinary catheter tools have been developed collaboratively with national experts to support providers in delivering consistent evidence based catheter care. The use of the tools needs to be supported by strong leadership and education.
