Reforming the Mental Health Act
The Centre for Mental Health has published Reforming the Mental Health Act.  This document summarises the results of ten studies carried out as part of the Independent Mental Health Act Review (published December 2018).  The summary explores issues such as the rising use of the Mental Health Act since 2007; patterns and variations in the use of mental health legislation; approaches to preventing/reducing the use of the Act; compulsory community treatment; and the experiences of patients and carers.


Mental health: use of NICE guidance
NICE has published NICEimpact mental health.  This report considers how NICE evidence-based guidance has contributed to improvements in the care of people with mental health conditions.  The reports are based on data showing the uptake of our guidance and quality statement measures from national audits, reports, surveys and indicator frameworks.


NHS productivity
The Centre for Health Economics has published Productivity of the English National Health Service: 2016/17 update.  This report updates the Centre for Health Economics’ time-series of NHS productivity growth for the period 2015/16 to 2016/17 and reports trends in output, input and productivity since 2004/05.


e-Learning for Healthcare
Health Education England’s e-Learning for Healthcare has added/updated the following courses to its e-learning portal:

  • e-Dementia (updated) – essential knowledge and skills needed to support and enable people living with dementia and their family carers to live as well as possible
  • Place of Birth e-learning programme – focuses on the different place of birth options for healthy, pregnant women who are at low risk of complications

Procedures for CCGs: constitution change, merger or dissolution
NHS England has published Procedures for clinical commissioning groups to apply for constitution change, merger or dissolution – April 2019.  This document sets out the policy and procedures to be followed by CCGs and NHS England in the circumstances of a CCG wishing to apply to make changes to its constitution or to dissolve or two or more CCGs wishing to apply to merge.


Online pharmacy services
The General Pharmaceutical Council has updated their Guidance for registered pharmacies providing pharmacy services at a distance, including on the internet.  The revised guidance introduces further safeguards for obtaining medicines online including making sure medicines are clinically appropriate for patients.  They also include making sure the prescriber shares all relevant information with their GP after seeking the patient’s consent.


People performance management toolkit
NHS Employers has updated its People Performance Management Toolkit.  The toolkit aims to support NHS managers to make time to discuss all aspects of performance with staff and to nurture talent in their teams.  The update includes links to new guidance and resources.

Specialised commissioning
NHS England has published the following specialised commissioning policy statements:

  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for diabetic lower limb ulceration (diabetic foot ulcer) (all ages)
  • 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography-computed-tomography (PET CT) as part of radical radiotherapy treatment planning for oesophageal cancer (all ages)
  • Pazopanib for inoperable and metastatic malignant granular cell tumour (all ages)

Atlas of Shared Learning
NHS England has added the following case studies to The Atlas of Shared Learning:

  • Use of positive behaviour support in conjunction with the STOMP initiative to support the reduction of psychotropic medication use – Turning Point
  • Introduction of the ‘RAPP’ (Respiration, Activity, Perfusion, Position) Tool to minimise the risk of Sudden Unexpected Postnatal Collapse – Bedford
  • South London Mental Health and Community Partnership (SLP) Nursing Development Programme
  • Technology enabled care services to support people in rural settings – Shropshire
  • A leadership programme for nursing home managers in Southampton
  • An advance care planning facilitation initiative in care homes – Haringey
  • Introducing asthma guidance and support for Shropshire schools
  • Student nursing placements in general practice through the University of Lincoln
  • Positive behavioural support at the non-profit social enterprise PBS4
