Bereavement guide
The Academy of Fabulous Stuff, the Institute for Healthcare Management and IMS-Maxims have published Bereavement: a practical guide for NHS managers.  This guide is aimed at helping everyone who comes into contact with bereaved relatives, carers and friends to understand what is required of them and the organisations they work in. It is a check-list, how-to-do-it book providing advice and challenges for planners, policy-makers and practitioners.


Body image: impact on mental health
The Mental Health Foundation has published Body image: how we think and feel about our bodies.  This report presents data on the extent of body image concerns, how body image impacts on mental health and sets out individual actions people can take to improve how they feel about their bodies as well as national priorities for regulation, policy and practice.


Gender pay gap in the NHS
The Nuffield Trust has published The gender pay gap in the English NHS: analysis of some of the underlying causes.  This briefing looks at differences in basic pay between men and women employed by the NHS in England, based on data from the NHS electronic staff record for one month. It draws on previous analyses to describe the extent of pay differences by staff group, pay band, age and ethnicity; it also identifies factors that drive those differences.


Investigation into penalty charge notices in healthcare
The National Audit Office has published Investigation into penalty charge notices in healthcare.  This report examines the health sector’s use of penalty charge notices sent to those who claim a free prescription or dental treatment without a valid reason, whether fraudulently or in error.  It focuses on the entitlement to free prescriptions and dental care; the use of penalty charge notices to recover funds for the NHS and to deter fraud; and improving knowledge about eligibility for exemptions.


NICE Surveillance reports
NICE has published the Surveillance Reports below.  These provide a summary of new evidence published related to a NICE guideline and include the decision that NICE has taken about the need to update the guideline.

  • Surgical site infections: prevention and treatment (NG125, 2019) – surveillance decision: NICE will update the guideline
  • Sinusitis (acute): antimicrobial prescribing (NG79, 2017) – surveillance decision: NICE will not update the guideline
  • Sore throat (acute): antimicrobial prescribing (NG84, 2018) – surveillance decision: NICE will not update the guideline
  • Otitis media (acute): antimicrobial prescribing (NG91, 2018) – surveillance decision: NICE will not update the guideline
  • Urinary tract infection (lower): antimicrobial prescribing (NG109, 2018) – surveillance decision: NICE will not update the guideline
  • Prostatitis (acute): antimicrobial prescribing (NG110, 2018) – surveillance decision: NICE will not update the guideline
  • Pyelonephritis (acute): antimicrobial prescribing (NG111, 2018) – surveillance decision: NICE will not update the guideline
  • Urinary tract infection (recurrent): antimicrobial prescribing (NG112, 2018) – surveillance decision: NICE will not update the guideline
  • Urinary tract infection (catheter-associated): antimicrobial prescribing (NG113, 2018) – surveillance decision: NICE will not update the guideline
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (acute exacerbation): antimicrobial prescribing (NG114, 2018) – surveillance decision: NICE will not update the guideline
  • Bronchiectasis (non-cystic fibrosis), acute exacerbation: antimicrobial prescribing (NG117, 2018) – surveillance decision: NICE will not update the guideline

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease:  audit and patient outcomes
The Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership has published the following reports relating to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD):

  • COPD clinical audit 2017/18 – outlines the key messages and recommendations from the National Asthma and COPD Audit Programme’s latest round of the COPD clinical audit.  The main report is accompanied by a patient report and a data analysis and methodology report.
  • Outcomes of patients included in the 2017 COPD clinical audit – describes the findings from linkage of the 2017 COPD audit patient cohort and reports on 30 and 90 day readmission and mortality rates which allows for assessment of medium-term outcomes.

Involving mental health patients in service design
The Royal College of Psychiatrists has announced two new tools which aim to tackle inequalities in mental health care by involving patients in service design. The tools are intended for use by local health system leaders and have been developed by the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health to support best practice in mental health care for groups experiencing inequalities.


Implementing the Long Term Plan: key issues
NHS Confederation has published Implementing the NHS Long Term Plan: ten key issues for the proposed legislative changes.  This briefing sets out the ten key issues which have emerged from discussions and engagement with front-line leaders regarding the NHS Long Term Plan.


Drug and alcohol recovery: payment by results
RAND Europe has published Evaluation of the Drugs and Alcohol Recovery Payment by Results Pilot Programme: final report.  This report presents the results of an evaluation of eight drug and alcohol recovery Payment by Results pilots, commissioned by the Department of Health, which assessed whether and how the “payment by results”  approach encourages the development of not only the market for provision of services in these areas but also more effective recovery programmes.


NHS Long Term Plan announcements
NHS England has made the following announcements relating to the Long Term Plan:

  • NHS Stroke action will save hundreds of lives – announces a new £9 million programme to spot heart conditions earlier; it is expected to save at least 200 lives
  • NHS funds handheld headache-busting device as part of Long Term Plan – announces funding for a gadget which holds out hope for the one in 20 people who do not respond to traditional treatments for cluster headaches
  • NHS England funds £2million to boost system-wide leadership development – announces funding to help 23 areas kick-start or boost leadership development activities to support the entire NHS workforce
  • Army of NHS experts brought in to care homes to tackle over-medication – announces additional staff are being brought in to reduce the unnecessary medication of patients
  • New funding for rough sleepers living with mental illness and substance misuse – announces £1.9 million will be given to councils by Public Health England to help improve the health of rough sleepers.  Additional link: DHSC press release
  • Innovative brain cancer treatment aid now available across England – announces  an innovative cancer treatment aid 5-ALA is now available which will allow surgeons to identify areas of the brain affected by cancer more accurately, helping up to 2,000 patients a year.
