Older people with dementia
The Care Policy and Evaluation Centre of the London School of Economics has published Projections of Older People Living with Dementia and Costs of Dementia Care in the United Kingdom, 2019–2040. This report provides projections of the number of older people (aged 65 and over) living with dementia and the costs of healthcare, social care and unpaid care for older people living with dementia from 2019 to 2040 in the UK.

Recognising and responding to critically unwell patients
Problems in recognising and responding to deteriorating patients continues to be a major source of severe harm and preventable death in hospitals. Previous research has shown that up to a quarter of preventable deaths are related to failures in clinical monitoring.

NHS performance and waiting times
The Health Foundation has published NHS performance and waiting times. This long read explores how the NHS in England is performing and sets out priorities for the next government. The briefing concludes that if the NHS is to achieve its long-term vision of a service that can prevent ill-health, better manage long-term conditions, and treat people earlier, NHS staff will need time, space and skills to make change at all levels of the health and care system

Evaluating integrated care
The Nuffield Trust has published Evaluating integrated care: why are evaluations not producing the results we expect?  This briefing outlines some reasons why integrated care models are not reducing hospital admissions as expected.    It includes advice for model design and implementation, for commissioners of evaluation, and for evaluators on how to address these issues.

Children and Young People’s Patient Experience Survey
The Care Quality Commission has published the results from the Children and young people’s survey 2018.  The survey looks at the experiences of children, young people and their parents and carers attending hospital during November and December 2018.  The resources published include a summary report, quality and methodology report, and technical document.  Results are also listed by NHS trust and a benchmarking report is available for each trust.

Priorities for the incoming government
The NHS Confederation has published Fit for the future: how should the incoming Government help the NHS in England.  The NHS Confederation has surveyed its members to gauge what they feel are their most critical priorities for an incoming Government. This report summarises their most pressing issues: workforce, social care and capital investment.

The nation’s health
The Health Foundation has published The nation’s health: priorities for the next government.  This document suggests any new government should look to address some of the long-term trends in health, including the stalling of long-term improvements in life expectancy and widening health inequalities. This will require action that goes beyond the health and social care system; it also requires mechanisms that hold government to account for national progress on health.

Analytical Capability Index
The Health Foundation has produced the Analytical Capability Index, a tool to allow health and care organisations to measure and benchmark their current capability in using data analytics.  The Health Foundation is inviting health and care organisations to assess their analytical capability by answering key questions about how their organisation uses analytics. Participants will be scored on key areas of analytical capability and receive access to case studies and useful resources to improve their analytical capability.

Health of our ageing population

National Statistics has published Living longer: is 60 really the new 50?  This publication suggests measuring ageing in terms of remaining life expectancy, instead of years lived, may provide a better indicator of the health of our ageing population.

  • Planned earlier delivery for late pre-eclampsia may be better for mothers
