Improving performance by improving staff wellbeing: North Bristol NHS Trust – NHS Employers
This case study sets out how how North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT) Trust improved performance across the board and saved hundreds of thousands of pounds by prioritising and enhancing staff health and wellbeing. The trust launched a new staff wellbeing programme in January 2018, which was shaped by staff feedback from a series of surveys and staff listening events. Two themes emerged: workload and staff health and wellbeing. NBT created comprehensive plans to address both issues simultaneously.

Standing up to the test: learning lessons for the next phase of the national Covid-19 testing strategy – NHS Providers
This report aims to show the size of the task ahead to build a national test and trace service that will be fit for purpose for this coming winter. It says testing and tracing is an essential part of the national strategy to combat COVID-19. The report concludes that, despite the good progress shown by NHS Test and Trace since its creation in May, there is a difficult legacy the new service has to overcome.

How to do ‘learning’ in practice  – The King’s Fund
Health and care organisations are starting to turn to what can be learned from their experiences over the past few months. The prospect of a ‘learning’ process can sometimes fill us with dread: there is the looming threat of blame or punishment (whether formal or otherwise); or the more demotivating experience of an after-the-fact account of what could have been done better with the benefit of hindsight. Here are four things to pay attention to in order to cultivate a productive learning environment and point teams and systems in a positive direction for the future.

Decision making and mental capacity – National Institute for Health and Care Excellence
This quality standard covers decision making in people aged 16 and over, using health and social care services who may lack capacity to make their own decisions (now or in the future). It aims to support implementation of the aims and principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and relevant Codes of Practice. It is not a substitute for these.

Social Care Institute For Excellence
This guide discusses the lessons learned from hospital discharge and avoidance during the Covid-19 pandemic. It highlights challenges faced and good practice to prevent unnecessary admissions going forward.

The document includes: urgent actions to address inequalities in NHS provision and outcomes; mental health planning; restoration of adult and older people’s community health services; using patient-initiated follow-ups as part of the NHS Covid-19 recovery; finance — 2020/21 phase 3 planning submission guidance; and Covid-19 data collections — changes to weekend collections.
