Efficiency and the long-term plan
NHS Providers has published Making the most of the money: efficiency and the long-term plan. This report is based on a survey and interviews with trust leaders. It argues that although trusts recognise their responsibility to maximise efficiency the current approach method of driving efficiency in the health service is no longer sustainable. It suggests that trust leaders identify better ‘system’ working as the biggest, long term, efficiency opportunity.
Person centered care guidance
The Royal College of Physicians has published Top tips: person-centred care. This guidance is intended to support doctors to put patients at the heart of everything they do. It encourages doctors to ask patients about their priorities and worries; invite carers and relatives into the conversation with the support of the patient; and encourage a shared decision about the best treatment plan for each individual.
What could make a difference to the mental health of UK doctors? A review of the research evidence – Society of Occupational Medicine
This report found that the incidence of mental health problems among doctors is increasing alongside the growing demands and diminishing resources experienced in the healthcare sector. GPs, trainee and junior doctors appear to be particularly vulnerable, experiencing distress and burnout early in their career. The stigma associated with disclosing mental health problems and ‘a failure to cope’ revealed in the report mean that many doctors are reluctant to seek help as they fear sanctions and even job loss.
National mortality case record review: annual report 2018 – Royal College of Physicians
This report reveals that hospitals are using a standardised review approach to learn from adult acute deaths and improve patient care. It cites a number of case studies where the structured judgement review process has made positive contributions to improving healthcare for patients.
Making hospitals safe for people with diabetes – Diabetes UK
This report has been developed through conversations with people with diabetes, diabetes inpatient teams, healthcare professionals working in hospitals and hospital managers. It highlights the challenges facing diabetes inpatient services and shows what should be in place in all hospitals.
Advanced critical care practitioners – NHS Employers
This case study looks at how Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NUTH) introduced advanced critical care practitioners (ACCPs) into multidisciplinary teams across its critical care units. NUTH introduced the role to overcome challenges around patient demand and workforce supply, and was one of the first trusts in England to train and employ ACCPs.
Female genital mutilation
The Government has updated Multi-agency statutory guidance on female genital mutilation. This guidance is for all persons and bodies who are under statutory duties to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and vulnerable adults. It is not intended to replace wider safeguarding guidance, but to provide additional advice on FGM. It may be relevant to those working with women and girls at risk of FGM or dealing with its consequences.
