Transforming elective care services

NHS England has published the following handbooks for commissioners, providers and those leading the local transformation of elective care services. They describe what local health and care systems can do to transform elective care services at pace, why this is necessary and how the impact of this transformation can be measured. They also contain practical guidance for implementing and adopting a range of interventions to ensure patients see the right person, in the right place, first time.

  • Transforming elective care services: respiratory
  • Transforming elective care services: gynaecology
  • Transforming elective care services: general surgery

Children and young people’s cancer services

NHS England has launched two consultations seeking views on proposed changes to Children’s cancer services and Teenager and Young Adults Cancer Services. The aim of the revised service specifications is to improve the outcomes and experience of children, teenagers and young adults with cancer. The consultations close on 4 August 2019.  Additional link: NHS England blog

Interim NHS People Plan – summary

The Healthcare Financial Management Association has published Summary of the Interim NHS People Plan. This briefing summarises the key points across the five key areas of the interim plan – making the NHS the best place to work; improving the leadership culture; tackling the nursing challenge; delivering 21st century care; and a new operating model for workforce.

NICE Surveillance Reports

NICE has published the Surveillance Reports below. These provide a summary of new evidence published related to a NICE guideline and include the decision that NICE has taken about the need to update the guideline.

  • Improving outcomes for people with skin tumours including melanoma (CSG8, 2006) – surveillance decision: NICE will update the guideline
  • Melanoma: assessment and management (NG14, 2015) – surveillance decision: NICE will update the guideline
  • Falls in older people: assessing risk and prevention (CG161, 2013) – surveillance decision: NICE will update the guideline

NIHR Signals

The following research summaries have been added to the National Institute for Health Research website:

  • Iron deficiency in people with chronic kidney disease can be managed with either oral or IV therapy
  • A laser eye procedure can be effective and safe if used early as treatment for glaucoma
  • 5% fluorouracil cream is the best first-line treatment for actinic keratosis skin lesions

Diverse leadership

The NHS Confederation has published Chairs and non-executives in the NHS: the need for diverse leadership.  This report examines the arrangements for the recruitment and appointment of chairs and non-executives within the NHS. It finds chairs and non-executive directors on boards that run NHS organisations in England have become less diverse over the last 15 years, with fewer people of black and minority ethnicity and women occupying the positions.

Review of gross negligence manslaughter and culpable homicide

The General Medical Council has published Independent review of gross manslaughter and culpable homicide.  This review examines how the law on gross negligence manslaughter and culpable homicide are applied to medical practice.  The aim of the review’s recommendations is to encourage a renewed focus on a just culture, reflective practice, and individual and systemic learning

Evidence-Based Interventions

NHS England has published patient leaflets for each of the interventions in the Evidence-Based Interventions guidance.  Each leaflet describes the condition relating to that intervention, the benefits and risks of treatment including what would happen if nothing was done and the alternative treatments available.
