National Diabetes Audit
The Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership and NHS England have published National Diabetes Audit: Core Report 1 – Care Processes and Treatment Targets. This report examines the findings from the 2017-18 audit. It contains the full key findings, recommendations and new analysis relating to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, including new treatment targets showing statin prescriptions for CVD risk reduction.
Waiting times for elective and cancer treatment
The Public Accounts Committee has published NHS waiting times for elective and cancer treatment. The report finds the percentage of patients treated within waiting times standards continues to get worse for both elective (non-urgent care) and cancer treatment. It also finds NHS organisations are not being sufficiently held to account for ensuring patients’ rights to treatment within maximum waiting times for elective care and that national organisations lack curiosity regarding the impact of longer waits on patient outcomes and patient harm.
Carers in general practice
NHS England has published Supporting carers in general practice: a framework of quality markers. This document offers a series of practical ideas for improving how general practice can better identify and support carers of all ages. The framework has been developed in partnership with carers, primary care teams and other key stakeholders. Additional link: NHS England press release
‘Declare Your Care’ survey results
The Care Quality Commission has published the latest Declare Your Care: survey results data. The data indicates that people from a black and minority ethnic (BME) background are less likely than those from a non-BME background to raise concerns about the standard of care they receive, particularly in relation to mental health.
Carers Innovation Fund
The Department of Health and Social Care has published Carers Innovation Fund: how to apply. This guidance provides information on how organisations can apply for a share of £5 million funding to improve support for carers. Applications are sought from organisations from a mix of sectors for projects that will help carers to be: more recognised and connected; better able to juggle working and caring; and better able to look after their own health and wellbeing. Speech and language therapy services for children
The Children’s Commissioner has published We need to talk; access to speech and language therapy. This report examines spending on speech and language therapy services (SLT) for children across the country to help identify where children who need support are falling through the gaps. The report reveals a ‘postcode lottery’ of spending, with huge variations across different areas. The Children’s Commissioner makes a number of recommendations for improving SLT provision for children.
Data-driven approach to cancer care
Reform has published Reformer Thoughts – a data-driven approach to cancer care. This article summarises views of healthcare experts and shows how data are currently shaping the delivery of cancer care, how to gain the most from data that are currently available and how to maximise the potential of this data in the future.
Pharmacy services and medicines optimisation within ICS
The Royal College of Pharmacists has published A systems approach to medicines optimisation and pharmacy. This online guide aims to help pharmacists develop the leadership qualities needed to work at local and regional level across different NHS systems in England. It includes practical advice to encourage collaborative working as part of the health and social care team.
Public Health services
The Department of Health and Social Care has announced that local authorities will continue to commission public health services. The review recommends that the NHS work much more closely with local authorities on public health so that commissioning is more joined-up and prevention is embedded into a wider range of health services.
