Play and social skills may protect children who have difficulties with spoken language.

(NIHR Alert. Researchers looked at the social and play skills of young children with developmental language disorder (DLD). They found that those with good early social and play skills developed fewer behaviour or mental health problems as they grew up. The research suggests that therapies and education techniques based on play and understanding other children could help children with DLD avoid later problems.)

Mental Health Campaign

Every Mind Matters campaign launched

Public Health England have launched a new campaign – Every Mind Matters, to support the well being of children, young people and their carers. The Covid pandemic has impacted everyone and research shows that children are more anxious, worried and lonely than ever before. These new stresses could cause harm to the mental health of the young generation.

This new advice supports parents and carers to recognise signs that their child may be struggling with their mental health and provides support to help them maintain good quality well being.

Occupational therapy: unlocking the potential of children and young people

Royal College of Occupational Therapists report outlining the role that occupational therapists play in improving the lives of children and young people with physical, learning and mental health needs. It demonstrates, through a series of case studies, how occupational therapists help children and young people participate in the activities that they want or need to do at home, at school or work and during their free time. It also shows how occupational therapists are key to promoting collaboration between, health, social care, education and the voluntary sector.

Support for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities in England

This report assesses how well children with special education needs and disabilities are being supported in schools in England.  The report finds that the system for supporting children with SENDS is not financially sustainable and calls for the government to secure improvements in quality and sustainability which are needed to ensure value for money.
