Implementing system-wide positive behaviour support through capable environments: a practice-based evaluation.

Knight J. Tizard Learning Disability Review 2026;31(2): 138–150.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the feasibility, acceptability and early outcomes of implementing a system-wide PBS model, using service-based evaluation data from a pilot. The model targeted organisational domains within the capable environments (CE) framework as a universal-level support. A pre–post, mixed-methods design was used with two UK-based adult IDD service providers.

Implementing skills-based treatment in naturalistic contexts.

Price H. Tizard Learning Disability Review 2026;31(2):127–137.

Where children develop behaviours that challenge (BtC), these can affect their, and their family’s, quality of life. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility and acceptability of Practical functional assessment (PFA) and Skills-based treatment (SBT), delivered in naturalistic settings, in the United Kingdom. The quantitative data indicated that each of the children developed skills relating to communication, tolerance and cooperation.

Attachment and caregiving in families with parental learning disabilities

Parents with learning difficulties often face significant challenges that contribute to their overall disadvantage. Research shows these parents are over-represented in child welfare systems, with international estimates suggesting that 40-60% of their children are removed from their care at some point.

While safeguarding concerns remain central, these figures raise important questions about how parenting capacity is assessed and how parents are supported. We explore this further in our latest blog from the Working Together with Parents Network.
