The primary aim of this review is to examine the development and the potential of strengths-based models in social work and the social care sector. The literature review will address questions around how these approaches impact on practice, and what this means for individuals in receipt of social care services and their carers or families.
This review identifies three overarching features of the terrain:
Generally, there are three broad groupings of literature: conceptual material; material on models; and grey literature; plus a small number of evaluative papers
Strengths-based approaches are comparatively more prevalent in social work than social care (which may not be surprising given its origins).Strengths-based approaches are being embraced by policy makers but questions remain about: its definition (how it is distinct from other approaches, and how it should be conceptualised); its effectiveness and feasibility (including its intersection with local authority eligibility thresholds); and how it should/can be evaluated.

Health technology assessment approaches in the UK (as well as some other countries) limit themselves to evaluating health benefits that accrue to treated individuals and resource use within the health care system. As a result, vaccines and other technologies that generate broader benefits – such as maintaining health care capacity or labour productivity – may be undervalued and underused. This report on the broader value of vaccines (commissioned by the ABPI Vaccines Group) sets out actionable short- and long-term recommendations on how to drive change towards recognising and rewarding the broader value of vaccines in the UK.

(This report, commissioned by Mobiquity and conducted by Censuswide, reveals that half of UK patients aged over 55 preferred digital tools instead of in-person consultations during COVID-19. The most preferred digital tools used by over 55s included remote monitoring (50%) and video examinations (50%).)

This report finds that the Covid-19 response has greatly accelerated the use of digital technology, has mainstreamed remote consultations, and similar effects are being seen for remote monitoring. There has been greater flexibility and resilience in the workforce, as well as improved decision-making and access to information through the better use of data and simplified information governance guidance. It concludes that these changes should be embedded and extended to support the health and care system’s recovery from the pandemic and ongoing resilience.
